Gentle exercise, powerful results
Hydrotherapy—therapeutic swimming in warm water—is a safe, effective way to support recovery, mobility, and overall wellbeing in dogs and cats. At Running Free Animal Physiotherapy, our purpose-built pool offers a controlled, low-impact environment that can aid healing and strengthen muscles without putting stress on joints.
Why Swimming?
- Non-weight bearing: Water supports the body, reducing pressure on painful or healing joints.
- Improved mobility: Swimming increases joint range of motion and helps break down stiffness.
- Muscle building: The resistance of water helps rebuild strength after injury or surgery.
- Pain relief: Warm water soothes sore muscles and promotes blood flow for healing.
- Weight management: Great for dogs who can’t manage land-based exercise due to pain or injury.
Who Can Benefit?
- Arthritis or joint stiffness
- Hip or elbow dysplasia
- Post-operative recovery (e.g., cruciate surgery, joint replacement)
- Neurological conditions
- Muscle atrophy or weakness
- Obesity or reduced fitness
- General conditioning in working or sporting dogs
Cats can also benefit — although less common, some tolerate hydrotherapy well, especially when recovering from injuries or after surgery.
